"Municipalities as integrators and coordinators
in adaptation to climate change"
The next press trip took place in Tiszatarján, on 28th September 2020. Lajosné Bögre, Mayor of Tiszatarján welcomed all the participants, especially the press staff, and gave a speech about the hard work the municipality put into creating the amazing lake system.
In 2006, with the cooperation of WWF Hungary, created a sustainable floodplain management model within the framework of One Europe – More Nature programme, which served as a solution to fight off invasive plant species. They started to graze gray cattle and water buffalo on the cleared floodplain area. However, as a result of climate change, during the long dry years, even the lakes formed from the floodplain’s cubic pits, which serve as a habitat for water buffaloes, have almost dried out. To increase the quantity of retainable water supply, they created another basin, with natural slopes at the lakeside. A pier was also created within the framework of the project, where the visitors can observe the water buffaloes closely – said Éva Burainé Hajdú, Notary of Tiszatarján.
Dr. Róza Számadó, Head of Department representing the Ministry of Interior, said that it makes her proud to look at the completed pilot site. During the implementation it was important to create environmental and climate-friendly solution, which can also improve the quality of life of local residents and farmers. She added, that with her colleagues they are working on spreading the use of these innovative and close-to-nature solutions in Hungary and to implement as many similar developments as possible during the 2021-2027 EU budget cycle.
The press conference was followed by an on-site tour, where the press could walk through the whole completed water buffalo study trail. After the personal interviews, participants went back to the Mayor’s Office to have a lunch made from local products. The news about the project site appeared in every significant regional media.
