"Municipalities as integrators and coordinators
in adaptation to climate change"
The second press trip within the framework of the LIFE-MICACC project took place in Püspökszilágy, on the 17th September 2020. Mayor Tordai Sándor welcomed all participants, then each speaker presented their point of view, related to the implementation and the significance of the pilot site in Püspökszilágy: Mátyás Farkas, Climate Change Expert from WWF Hungary, Dr. László Balatonyi, Head of Department from the General Directorate for Water Management, Dr. Róza Számadó, Head of Department from the Ministry of Interior of Hungary’s Coordination Office for Municipalities. After the press conference, the media staff and interested individuals could take a walk around the complex natural water retention measures completed in several intervention sites. The practical evidence shows that since the completion of the natural water retention measures Püspökszilágy became protected against flash floods, and thanks to the reservoir the warm and dry periods are more bearable for the local residents, than ever before. The flora and fauna also became more colourful with several plant and animal species. We hope that the pilot project completed in Püspökszilágy will serve as an example for all the hilly mountainous settlements battling with problems related to flash floods.
